This is correct. The only progress saved for Player 2 is that any PS4/Xbox achievements earned as you play. The rest of the time, Player 2 is supporting the host player in their playthrough. yeah I know, it happened to me all the time and this is ruining the coop. Mainly that happens because of the achievements which give insane amount of exp. There really should be an option to freeze or disable achievements when playing a coop game with friends. That would solve the problem.

Dead Island is a co-op. You can join four other players online to survive on a zombie-infested island. You can trade weapons and items, drive one another around, revive your fallen friends, and kill zombies.
